Bosnia and Herzegovina came into the 2026 World Cup as the lowest-ranked side in Group B but with a real shot at a Round of 32 spot. After two matchdays the picture is sharper, but it is not over. This post lays out exactly which R32 match Bosnia plays in each finishing position, including dates, kickoff times in ET, and the most likely opponent in each scenario.
Where Bosnia stand right now
Through Matchday 2 of the group stage, Bosnia have one point from a 1-1 draw with Canada in Toronto and a 4-1 loss to Switzerland at SoFi Stadium. Canada and Switzerland sit on four points each, separated only by goal difference after Canada's 6-0 demolition of Qatar.
| Pos | Team | Pts | GD | GF | GA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Canada | 4 | +6 | 7 | 1 |
| 2 | Switzerland | 4 | +3 | 5 | 2 |
| 3 | Bosnia and Herzegovina | 1 | -3 | 2 | 5 |
| 4 | Qatar | 1 | -6 | 1 | 7 |
Bosnia's final group game is against Qatar on June 24 at Lumen Field, Seattle. The full picture also depends on the simultaneous Switzerland vs Canada match in Vancouver. Three R32 paths remain open.
Path 1: Finish 2nd in Group B
This is the narrow path. To finish ahead of Switzerland on points, Bosnia need Switzerland to lose to Canada in m49 at BC Place. If Switzerland wins or draws, Bosnia cannot mathematically reach 2nd no matter how many goals they score against Qatar.
Assuming Canada beats Switzerland by one goal, Bosnia would need to beat Qatar by roughly five to six goals to overtake Switzerland's goal difference (Switzerland +3 dropping to +2, Bosnia -3 climbing to +2 or better). Tiebreaks for FIFA World Cup matches go points, then overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then head-to-head, per FIFA regulations Article 12.5.
Reward for clearing both bars: a Round of 32 match as 2B against the runner-up of Group A, played as Match 73 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 28 at 6:00 PM ET (3:00 PM PT). The most likely 2A opponent is South Korea given current Group A standings (Mexico in front on 6 pts, South Korea on 3).
Path 2: Finish 3rd, qualify as a best third-placed team
This is the realistic path. Beat Qatar in m50 and Bosnia finish on 4 points, an above-average total for a third-placed team. Per FIFA's 12-group format, the eight best of the twelve third-placed teams advance to the new Round of 32. Ranking is by points, then overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then FIFA ranking.
Projecting the other third-placed teams using current scores plus market odds from the predictor, Bosnia at 4 points should clear the cutoff comfortably. The 8 third-placers most likely to qualify: Japan (F), Iran (G), Algeria (J), Scotland (C), DR Congo (K), Saudi Arabia (H), Bosnia (B), Croatia (L).
When the eight qualifying thirds get allocated to R32 slots, Group B's third-placer is assigned to Match 81 if Group B is one of the qualifying groups. That match is against the winner of Group D, at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara on Wednesday, July 1 at 5:00 PM PT (8:00 PM ET).
Group D winner is essentially locked: the United States is on 6 points with +5 goal difference after beating Paraguay 4-1 and Australia 2-0. Even a loss to Türkiye in the final group game leaves USA with the points and goal difference Australia and Paraguay cannot realistically catch.
So the projected R32 matchup is Bosnia vs United States, in Seattle, on July 1. Football Meets Data's pre-knockout bracket projection lands at the same fixture, which lines up with the algorithmic allocation in FIFA's 2026 regulations.
Path 3: Bosnia eliminated
If Bosnia fail to beat Qatar, they end the group stage on 1 or 2 points and almost certainly drop out of the best-eight third-placed group. Qatar themselves are essentially eliminated at this point - they would need a win plus large goal swings from other groups.
How the bracket reads if everything chalks
The Football Meets Data pre-R32 bracket projection, using current standings and Kalshi market odds, pencils in these Round of 32 ties on Bosnia's half of the draw:
- •South Korea vs Switzerland
- •Netherlands vs Morocco
- •Germany vs Türkiye
- •France vs Sweden
- •Portugal vs Croatia
- •Spain vs Austria
- •United States vs Bosnia and Herzegovina
- •Belgium vs Senegal
On the other half: Brazil vs Japan, Ivory Coast vs Norway, Mexico vs Scotland, England vs DR Congo, Argentina vs Uruguay, Australia vs Egypt, Canada vs Ecuador, Colombia vs Ghana. Most of those will shift as the final matchday plays out, but the framework around Bosnia's path is stable.
What to watch on June 24
- •Switzerland vs Canada at BC Place, Vancouver - 12:00 PT / 3:00 PM ET. A Canada win is the only result that opens Bosnia's path to 2nd.
- •Bosnia vs Qatar at Lumen Field, Seattle - 12:00 PT / 3:00 PM ET. A win secures 4 points and likely best-third qualification.
- •Group D Matchday 3 (June 25): if USA somehow drop points, Bosnia's projected R32 opponent shifts to Australia.
