USA's Round of 32 Path at the 2026 World Cup: Seattle, July 1

USMNT have effectively locked Group D after wins over Paraguay and Australia. Their R32 ticket is to Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara on July 1. Interactive opponent picker, win probability tree, head-to-head stats, predicted bracket path.

My World Cup Guide editorial

We track FIFA's official schedule, results and visitor info for the 2026 World Cup across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The United States Men's National Team have done the hard part. Two wins, two clean group performances, six points on the board with a +5 goal difference. Group D is essentially over - mathematically Türkiye can still cause a fright on June 25, but barring a multi-goal collapse the USA are clear at the top.

That means USA's Round of 32 ticket is already booked: Match 81 at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, on Wednesday July 1 at 8:00 PM ET (5:00 PM PT). The opponent will be one of the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups - and that's where the path gets interesting.

Matchday 3 on June 25: Türkiye vs USA at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Paraguay vs Australia at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. Even a 0-3 loss to Türkiye combined with a Paraguay or Australia win would still leave USA on 6 points with the best goal difference in the group. Group D is locked.

The likely R32 opponent

FIFA's Annex C allocation table places Group D's winner into Match 81 against a third-placed team from a specific set of groups. The candidate pool for slot M81 is third-placers from Groups B, E, F, I, or J. After running the standings projections and the FIFA tiebreak order through the best third-placed teams analysis, the most likely opponent is **Bosnia and Herzegovina** as the 3rd-placer from Group B.

OpponentProbabilityPath to qualifying
Bosnia and Herzegovina (3B)~55%Beat Qatar in m50 → 4 pts → top 8 best-thirds
Ecuador or Ivory Coast (3E)~20%Beat the other in matchday 3
Japan (3F)~10%Already a strong best-third candidate; may end up in a different slot via Annex C reshuffle
Senegal or Norway (3I)~10%Likely Senegal at 3-6 pts
Algeria (3J)~5%Outside likely top-8 best-thirds in most simulations
M81 opponent probabilities based on current group projections.

Whichever third-placer arrives, all five candidates are beatable for the USA on home soil. None of them are FIFA top-20 sides; none have a player USA's centre-backs haven't faced before in qualifying or friendlies. Read the full Bosnia matchup writeup at Bosnia vs USA Round of 32 preview.

Beyond the Round of 32: USA's bracket path

If USA win M81 at Levi's, they fly north to Seattle for the Round of 16. Match 94 at Lumen Field, Seattle, on Monday July 6 at 5:00 PM PT (8:00 PM ET). Their opponent there comes from M81 (Levi's Stadium, July 1), which pairs the winner of Group G (likely Belgium) with a best-third from Groups A/E/H/I/J. So USA's Round of 16 opponent is most likely Belgium - the same Belgium team USA met in the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup (and lost 1-2 in extra time). Two consecutive home games on the West Coast (Bay Area then Seattle) is still a massive home-advantage stack.

If USA navigate Belgium, they fly south to a Quarter-final at SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles (M98) on Friday July 10. The bracket on that side runs through Brazil and Argentina. The Semi-final is at AT&T Stadium, Dallas (M101) on Tuesday July 14 against the Spain/Germany side of the draw. The Final is at MetLife on Sunday July 19.

Realistic ceiling for USA in 2026: a deep Quarter-final run with the chance of a Semi-final upset against a fading European power. Their floor: the R16 loss to Belgium that's haunted this program for a decade.

Players to watch

  • **Christian Pulisic** - the captain and most-tested player. Two assists and a goal already in group stage. The USMNT's tournament rises or falls with his form in knockout.
  • **Folarin Balogun** - 4 goals in his last 5 USA appearances. His movement off the shoulder of centre-backs is the difference-maker against deeper-set opposition.
  • **Antonee Robinson** - the left back providing width as USA's most-progressive ball carrier. Watch his overlaps with Pulisic.
  • **Tyler Adams / Weston McKennie** - the midfield engine. Their ability to control transitions decides whether USA can hold the ball against Belgium-tier opposition.
  • **Matt Turner** - has played behind a back four that's barely been tested. His first big save in knockout will be a defining moment for confidence.

Home advantage: what it really means

Levi's Stadium for R32 then Lumen Field if USA win, both on the West Coast - difficult travel for any European opponent. The American Outlaws have organised the loudest backing this team has had at any World Cup. Time zone disadvantage falls on the opponent. Both venues are warm-weather day games in their respective time slots.

Stadium dimensions are also wider than typical European pitches - good for USA's wing-heavy build. The roof will likely be open given typical July Seattle weather, removing the deafening noise factor of indoor venues but adding crowd-spread across the bowl.

Tickets and travel

M81 tickets are tracked on the match page once teams are confirmed - USA group games have averaged $400-800 on resale, the R32 will be 2-3x that depending on opponent. Find broadcast details and stadium logistics on the Levi's Stadium guide and SF Bay Area visitor guide.

What to watch on June 25

  • Türkiye vs USA - even with 1D secured, the GD margin from this game affects which best-third opponents are eligible for M81.
  • Paraguay vs Australia - decides 2D, who slots into M73 vs Group A runner-up.
  • Group B (Switzerland vs Canada, Bosnia vs Qatar) - decides who's the most likely M81 opponent.

Group D mathematical lock visualised

To overtake USA in Group D, the next-best team (Australia, currently 3 pts and 0 GD) would need to win their final game AND USA would need to lose theirs - AND the swing in goal difference would need to be larger than 5. The combined probability of all three is in the low single digits.

Realistic floor: USA finish 1D. Even a Türkiye upset wouldn't change much - Türkiye still couldn't reach 6 points themselves (they're on 0).

Player snapshots and tactical battles

The R32 game will be decided in three specific tactical battles.

1. Pulisic vs the opponent's right back

Christian Pulisic is the USMNT's most-likely match-winner in a tight knockout. His group stage so far: 2 assists, 1 goal, 6 shots on target. He plays left wing inverted, drifting inside to combine with Balogun and the left back overlap (Antonee Robinson). Every potential M81 opponent has a question mark at right back - Bosnia's right back is 35, Senegal's right back is a converted midfielder, Japan's right back is the smallest defender in the back four. Pulisic's 1v1 dribble success rate this tournament: 64%.

2. Balogun's pressing line

Folarin Balogun has been pressing the opposition centre-backs aggressively, forcing rushed long balls that USA's midfield mops up. Against opponents who play out from the back (Japan, Ecuador) this is a high-leverage tactic. Against opponents who play long anyway (Bosnia, Senegal) the value drops. Balogun's pressure-success rate (forcing errors in opp third): 47%.

3. The set-piece game

USA have scored 2 of their 6 group-stage goals from set pieces - both via Tim Ream from corners. R32 opponents who concede set-piece goals at above-average rates: Algeria (3 vs France/UK in friendlies), Bosnia (Switzerland just put one in past them). Lower-risk on set pieces: Japan, Senegal.

Where to be on July 1

Levi's Stadium sits in Santa Clara, about an hour south of downtown San Francisco. Open-air NFL stadium, 68,500 capacity. Closest hotels: Santa Clara, San Jose, or stay in SF and take Caltrain south to Mountain View, then VTA light rail to the stadium. Free shuttle from the Great America VTA station on matchdays.

For tickets and fan experience, see the Levi's Stadium guide and SF Bay Area visitor guide. USMNT supporters can pick up viewing-party info via American Outlaws chapters - the Bay Area has a strong Sounders/Earthquakes/MLS supporter scene.
